Rempe Pottery Tools

Picture
Rempe Pottery Tools are tools that I've created, and that I use.   In addition to my interest in clay I have always enjoyed woodworking.  My dad had a small woodshop where I loved spending time building things. While pursing my MFA in ceramics at SDSU I was fortunate enough to take classes with Wendy Maruyama in the furniture program.  I built a number of pieces that challenged me in very different ways compared to clay.  Making tools allows me to still get small periods of time working to work with wood.   Local potters requested my tools enough that I decided that I will start offering them to a wider audience.  Sign up for the email list below to be the first to know when new tools are available.

Plate Ribs

Picture
These are very thick wooden ribs that allow you to get very strong compression on the bottom of a plate to prevent cracking.   It also gives a very flat surface, which can sometimes be difficult on larger plates and platters.

Rib Holder

I finally got sick of chasing wet metal around the deck of my wheel and decided to make something that would allow me to easily select my rib and make them easy grab.  The rib holder will accommodate ribs with variety of thicknesses.

Sponge on a Stick

Picture
I made this wire tool to address the wire that would often press into my fingers when using a standard wire.  The wire tool can be order in short, standard, or long lengths.

These tools are used to get the water out of the bottom of a narrow piece of pottery that you can no longer get your hand inside.  The clip is stainless steel and is glued in with a marine grade epoxy that is made for water exposure.  The clip allows you to easily replace a worn out sponge, or to switch to different size sponges depending on the piece you are making.

Cleanup Tool

I use the flat end of this tool to smooth surfaces around attachment points and the pointed end to compress and emphasize lines around handles and other attachments.

Distortion Tool

Picture
I developed this tool when I had been distorting my pots from the inside with my finger. As the forms got larger the finger marks would show from the inside so I made a tool with a rounded larger wooded end to achieve a smooth distortion.
